The Trials are missions given to you by the council to complete in the manner stated, at low ranks this may mean some form humility, proving you have expanded knowledge of the system or are able to learn quickly, as you raise in rank so will the amount of respect and privilege you are afforded until you reach the rank of Sith Lord where you will be expected to prepare for a seat on the Dark Council.
